From Noeuconstitution

In Denmark, a referendum will be organised on 27 september 2005.

ATTAC in Denmark has prepared for the referendum on the Constitution for a couple of months now. For long prospects have been bleak. For months the polls have shown that the Constitution would be approved by the Danes at the referendum on the 27th of September. And that with a comfortable majority.

So not least for us it was a relief and a great triumph what happened in France and in the Netherlands. Our friends have done a marvellous job!

And all of a sudden things have changed in this country as well.

Today - for the first time - there's a poll giving the No the lead. 39,5% would vote against the Constitution, and only 30,8% would vote in favour if the referendum was to be held today. The rest have not decided.

In Denmark the Maastricht Treaty was defeated at a referendum in 1992, and later the Danes rejected the euro in september 2000. On both occassions the Yes was way ahead untill a few days before the actual vote. So when a poll can show a No-majority today, we're in a strong position.

There is no doubt that this is a reaction to the result in France and the Netherlands. A large group -I think- feel very strongly that a lonely Danish No would be a drop in the Ocean; negligible and of no consequence. Some sort of TINA-syndrome that could destroy any chance of a no.

That has changed! So once again: Thanks to ATTAC-France and to our friends in the Netherlands.

For this and for other reasons its almost a pity that we won't get the chance to flex our muscles. If I'm not much mistaken the upcoming European Council will put aside the Constitution and the planned referendums in Denmark, Ireland and the UK will be called off.
